Bath’s inspirational landscapePress Release - 10 March 2009 Bath’s inspirational landscape
The role of the West’s landscape in inspiring artists through time will be explored in a lecture at the University of Bath on Wednesday (18 March).
Professional photographer Roger Vlitos will share his passion for the countryside surrounding Bath in an illustrated lecture showing how writers such as Thomas Hardy, and artists and photographers all found inspiration in the area.
The lecture is called ‘Spirit Country’ and the title quotes local 19th century nature and novelist Richard Jefferies who used the phrase to described the timeless and inspirational qualities of the landscape. After his father died, he was drawn to work in Wiltshire by a book by Richard Jefferies, given to him during the war by an elderly couple he met on a train journey through Swindon.
Roger also lectures on travel and landscape photography at the University of Bath.
Spirit Country is the latest in the series of GULP lectures (General University Lecture Programme).
Other lectures in the series include: Einstein’s 1905 Revolution in Physics, Dr Peter Ford MBE and Dr Vincent Smith MBE, 25 March.
All lectures start at 5:15pm at the Lecture Theatre 8 West 1.1
Admission and parking is free in the west car park at the Claverton Campus.
