(Boston) - Winnie Suen, MD, MSc, a geriatrician and palliative care consultant at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and assistant professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), has been selected as a member of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Innovation Advisors Program. The initiative, launched by the CMS Innovation Center, will help health professionals deepen or sharpen skills that drive improvements to patient care and reduce costs.

As one of the 73 Advisors, Suen will support the Innovation Center in or by testing new models of care delivery, form partnerships with local organizations to drive delivery system reform and improve health systems enabling the community will have better health and better care at a lower cost.

“We’re looking to these Innovation Advisors to be our partners—we want them to discover and generate new ideas that will work and help us bring them to every corner of the United States,” said CMS Innovation Center Director Rick Gilfillan, MD.

This initiative is funded by the Affordable Care Act and BUSM will receive a stipend of up to $20,000, which will be used to support Suen’s activities as an Innovation Advisor.

Suen is board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine and is a dedicated mentor for her students. She is the recipient of a number of awards, including the R. Knight Steel, MD Award in geriatric clinical medicine, and is a nationally recognized lecturer and author of peer reviewed articles. She was also selected as the Curtis Prout Fellow of the Academy at Harvard Medical School.

Suen graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Yale University, a Doctor of Medicine from University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine, a Master of Science from Boston University School of Public Health and a Master of Science in healthcare emergency management at Boston University. For her post-doctoral training, Suen was an internal medicine resident at BMC and an associate fellow in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. She also completed the BMC geriatrics fellowship and the Harvard Dana Farber/Massachusetts General Hospital Palliative Care fellowship. Suen is also a massage therapist, having graduated from the Cortiva School of Massage Therapy, and a medical acupuncturist.
