George Sherman Gallery Presents W. Perry Barton: Works on Paper on October 25

Boston, Mass. — Boston University’s George Sherman Union (GSU) Gallery will host a retrospective of works on paper by Boston artist W. Perry Barton beginning on Thursday, October 25 and running through Friday, December 14, 2001.

The exhibition will provide insight not only into the development of Barton’s process of working charcoal and acrylic together, but also into the nuances of various reoccurring themes. Barton has described his relationship with his chosen media of charcoal and acrylic as basic and elemental: "I have always been struck by the immediacy of working on paper. The way it responds to the touch of charcoal stick or brush is always reinvigorating — a source of satisfaction in and of itself."

Works entitled "Woman with Big Hair," "Boy with Burger," and "Black and White T.V." present the familiarity inherent in figurative work coupled with a sense of uneasiness. "Yellow Puppet" and "Empty Stage" lead into a more recent series dealing with "Mr. Punch." A third series explores the bathing figure of "Night Swimmers."

Barton is a 1974 alumnus of Boston University’s School for the Arts. He has had numerous exhibitions and is a twice recipient of a Massachusetts Artists Foundation grant. In 1994, he received a New England Foundation for the Arts NEA Regional Fellowship for his works on paper. He is one of six artists featured in the 1994 Davis Publications "Discovering Drawing," by Ted Rose.

Barton lives in Boston and works at the Pearl Street Studios in Dorchester. Most recently, his work has been on exhibit at the Break Point Gallery in Provincetown.EXHIBITION: W.
